Aikido Training

Beginning students will be provided with a solid foundation in the art. Dojo etiquette, stretching, initial body movements and ukemi skills will be the focus. Additionally, basic blending exercises, throws and pins will be taught using kihon (static) method; step-by-step.

Intermediate students who have a good grasp of ukemi and experience on the mat are taught blending and techniques in a more flowing manner (awase). At this level, rapid and instaneous ukemi is learned, as well as the technique of breakfalling.ryan02

Advanced students execute techniques with ki no nagare (full force and speed). At the advanced level, the basic techniques have become muscle memory and the student learns the concept of takemuso (instantaneous manifestation of technique) and explores the connection with the attacker.

Weapons. All students should participate in instruction in Iwama-style weapons. Aiki-ken (wooden sword) and Aiki Jo (staff), should allow a student opportunity for deeper insight into taijutsu or body training side of Aikido.

A student may expect that the training will include:

  • suwari-waza (seated techniques)
  • hamni handachi (attacker standing / receiver seated)
  • multiple attackers (randori, or chaos attack) and,
  • weapons training tied directly to advanced empty handed Aikido technique
  • disarming techniques against knife, sword, and staff attacks.

Training is always practiced with sincere respect for each other. Since we're lending our bodieserica02 to each other to train, there is a sprit of cooperation we help each other to improve our Aikido and our human potential. When one student improves the whole dojo improves. When one is purposely held back, none of us can advance.
